A Plurality Atlas

Plurality in Sweden

In Sweden, no translation of *Plurality* has been found, and there is almost no reporting on the book. What stands out is the coverage and the talks when Tang received the 2025 Right Livelihood Award, known in Swedish as "Alternativa Nobelpriset" (the alternative Nobel Prize).

Sweden is known as a country that long ago wrote into its constitution the right of anyone to request and read government documents. To this country came Audrey Tang, who had worked in Taiwan as a minister while publishing records of her own work, to receive an award. How has the book Plurality by Tang and E. Glen Weyl been received in Sweden?

In short

The survey for this article found no Swedish translation of Plurality [1][2]. There is also almost no Swedish-language reporting on the book itself.

What stands out is the coverage and the talks when Tang received the 2025 Right Livelihood Award in Stockholm. In Swedish, this award is commonly known as "Alternativa Nobelpriset" (the alternative Nobel Prize) [3][4].

For example

The award ceremony (December 2, 2025, Stockholm). The award's organizers announced the laureates on October 1, 2025, and said the awards would be presented in Stockholm on December 2 [3]. Tang's citation reads: "För att främja användandet av digital teknik i syfte att stärka medborgare, förnya demokratin och läka klyftor i samhället" (for advancing the use of digital technology to empower citizens, renew democracy and heal divides in society) [5]. Tang's acceptance speech includes the line "We the people are the true superintelligence." [6]

A talk at Stockholm University (December 1, 2025). Tang was invited to the university by Eva Hansson, deputy director of the Centrum för globala Asienstudier (Centre for Global Asian Studies) in the university's Department of Political Science [7]. According to the university's report, Tang said that digital technology can work as a kind of "medborgargym" (citizens' gym) that trains participation in society [8].

A conversation on SVT Forum (February 10, 2026). In a conversation in English, the host, Teldah Mawarire, referred to Plurality, the book Tang co-authored, and asked what Tang thought the world of technology would look like 20 years from now. Tang's answer pointed toward people forking big technologies (making copies and working on them themselves) to create people's versions such as Wikipedia and Signal [9].

The host then asked whether technology should be regulated or left to innovation. Tang's answer was: "the idea of Plurality is to take people's grievances, the vulnerabilities, the harms you mentioned, but then empower these people to imagine alternatives" [9].

In more detail

The book and translations

In LIBRIS, the union catalog of the National Library of Sweden, the only results were the English originals (Plurality, 2024; Radical Markets, 2018) and the Spanish translation of Radical Markets, Mercados radicales (2019) [1].

The book has 160 "forks" on GitHub (16 of them could not be retrieved) (a provisional count by this site, October 2026). None of them contains a Swedish directory. Swedish (sv) is also absent from the list of languages on the book's site, plurality.net [2]. On Swedish-language Google News, both "Glen Weyl" and "Radical Markets" returned 0 results. → What editions and translations of Plurality exist?

What the award coverage said

The coverage introduced Tang mainly through her practice in Taiwan, not through the book.

Encounters before the award

In January 2018, Anders Frick, a freelance journalist in Sweden, had a conversation with Tang. Frick said that "Sweden has more than 350 years of openness", and then asked whether disclosing information on request and the government proactively publishing open data are not different things. Tang's answer was "It's not that different." [12]

In the same year, 2018, Lars Ströman of Nerikes Allehanda wrote an article on a visit to Taiwan describing how Tang's work is made public. The article says that the general public knows Tang's work much better than they know the work of Swedish ministers or kommunalråd (full-time municipal politicians). In this context it describes Sweden as a country that has written "offentlighetsprincipen" (the principle of public access to official records) into its constitution [13].

Mentions of mechanisms

In an opinion piece in Dagens ETC (June 2025), David Koranyi, head of the organization Action for Democracy, proposed several reforms to protect democracy. One of them is kvadratisk röstning (Quadratic Voting), for which the piece gives the example of its use in Gramado, a small town in southern Brazil. Citizens' assemblies with the power to make laws are listed as another reform [14].

The only reporting retrieved on X's Community Notes (a system in which users add notes to posts) concerned a note added to a politician's post. Bulletin (January 2025) reported that a note had been added to an X post by Member of the European Parliament Arba Kokalari, who had criticized Meta's change of policy [15].

Institutions that came earlier

Sweden has long had participatory institutions that overlap with the book.

However, none of the sources collected this time connects these institutions to Tang or to the book.

What is debated

Where it fits in Plurality

What the Swedish sources discuss is mainly the practices the book introduces: vTaiwan and Polis, bridging (looking for agreement across differences of opinion), Community Notes and Quadratic Voting.

As for people, almost everything is about Audrey Tang; E. Glen Weyl does not appear in Swedish-language reporting.
