A Plurality Atlas

Plurality in Greece

The Greek translation of the book *Plurality* stopped in 2025, after a Greek developer had translated only the front matter. Even so, the book's official site lists Greek among the languages on its top page. No Greek-language reporting on the book has been found.

According to the book Plurality, the word "democracy" goes back to a meaning of "rule of the people" [1]. This book by Audrey Tang of Taiwan and E. Glen Weyl also touches on ancient Athens as a source of democracy. How, then, is the book being read in Greece today?

In short

The Greek translation of Plurality stopped in the spring of 2025, after one Greek developer had translated only the parts placed before the main text (the front matter) [2]. Even so, the book's official site plurality.net includes Greek as one of the six languages it shows at the top [3].

The research for this article found no Greek-language reporting that takes up the book or Weyl [4].

For example

A single translator (spring 2025). In April–May 2025, the GitHub (a place to store software) account KenonAlpha translated five front-matter files in the repository plurality-greek. The account's name is Kenon and its location is Greece. Its profile says: "Building a social network to mitigate disinformation, and other civic-tech." The title of the preface was translated as "Βλέποντας Πληθυντικά" (Seeing plurally) [2].

Into the official site (February 2026). On February 23, 2026, a change record (commit) in the new plurality.net created top pages in five languages: English, Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Greek. In another commit on the same day, the Greek text was brought in from "KenonAlpha/plurality-greek (5 chapters)" [3].

AI on the government's consultation site (September 2026). In September 2026, OpenGov.gr, the site where the Greek government invites comments on draft laws, was renewed. According to reports, features that analyze citizens' comments with AI, sort them into groups and code them (attach classification labels) were built in for the first time [5][6].

In more detail

The history of the translation

A Greek page originally existed from November 2022 on the old plurality.net, alongside nine other languages. At that time the translator field said Vassilis Tziokas, and the book's title was translated as "Πλουραλισμος" (pluralism) [7].

On April 28, 2025, Kenon submitted a proposal (PR) to retranslate this page. In its description, Kenon wrote that the earlier translation was "a very small portion of the original text" and "required extensive editing" [2]. In the retranslated version, the title became "Πληθυντικότητα" (plurality), and the translator field listed two people, Kenon and Tziokas [7].

Around the same time, Kenon also submitted a PR correcting a word in the book's repository ("corrected 'less' with 'more'", not merged), and created an empty repository named gov4git-identity-public [2]. → Gov4Git

Public activity breaks off in May 2025. No record has been found giving the reason the translation stopped [2].

Why the official site has Greek

When the translations were added to the official site on February 23, 2026, Japanese had 31 chapters, Thai 32 and Greek 5 [3]. No commit description or record of discussion giving the reason for choosing Greek has been found [3].

Because the front matter had been translated, the endorsements of the book (Chapter 0-0) could be shown in Greek. The description of a commit the next day says "Thai and Greek endorsements translated from their respective 0-0 chapter files" [3]. In the site's current settings, the languages shown at the top are six: English, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Greek and German [3]. → Editions and translations of the book

Reporting

Searches of Greek-language Google News for "Glen Weyl", "Radical Markets", Plurality and quadratic voting (Τετραγωνική ψηφοφορία) all gave 0 results (a provisional count by this site, October 2026). The top results for "Audrey Tang" were all about a British psychologist of the same name [4].

The only Greek-language article about Tang that was found is one carried by Philenews that bears the name ΑΠΕ-ΜΠΕ. It reported Tang's visit to the United Kingdom in June 2023 [8]. The Greek Wikipedia has an article on Tang (Όντρεϊ Τανγκ), but none on Weyl or on quadratic voting [4][9]. → Audrey Tang

The government's consultations and AI

According to an article in Documento, for draft laws that drew thousands of comments, reading them by hand was hard, and good comments could be buried in the sheer volume. In the new OpenGov.gr, AI is said to summarize the trends and proposals in citizens' comments, making it easier for those drafting a law to take them into the final text. The data from the comments gathered is also published through an Open API (an interface that outside software can read automatically) [5].

The article's journalist concludes that the real test is whether the citizens' opinions, objections and proposals summarized by AI actually make it into the text of the laws passed by parliament [5].

The aim of this system is close to Broad Listening, which hears and summarizes the voices of many people. None of the articles, however, mentions Plurality or broad listening by name.

Around Community Notes

In January 2025, the Cypriot newspaper Η Καθημερινή Κύπρου interviewed Δημήτρης Αλικάκος, head of the fact-checking organization Ellinika Hoaxes (Ελληνικά Hoaxes), about Meta's announcement that it would end fact-checking and switch to Community Notes (in which users add context to posts) [10].

Αλικάκος pointed out that this approach risks spreading false information. As an example, Αλικάκος said that in the 2024 European Parliament elections, about 70% of the X posts that European fact-checking organizations had confirmed as misinformation got no visible label through X's system. Αλικάκος also said that the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), to which Ellinika Hoaxes belongs, has proposed to Meta a hybrid form of Community Notes that works with professional fact-checkers [10]. → Community Notes

References to Athens

The book writes that democracy evolved from its "ancient Athenian origins" [1]. It also says that idealized portraits of democracy usually picture face-to-face discussion, and gives "the Athenian marketplaces" as an example [11].

Tang, too, has mentioned ancient Athens several times in conversations. In August 2019, in a conversation with Antonios Triantafyllakis from Greece (in Triantafyllakis's own words, a political activist, social innovator and educator), Tang called democracy "a social technology" [12]. In a March 2026 dialogue with Hiroki Azuma, Tang cited the ancient Greeks' choosing of people by lot (sortition) as an example of how democracy has always been inseparable from tools [13].

What is debated

Common misunderstandings

Where it fits in Plurality

Greece does not appear among the book's cases. There are three connections. The first is the translation (Editions and translations of the book). The second is Athens, which the book and Tang mention as a source of democracy. The third is the translator's interest in civic tech that aims to reduce disinformation, together with the debate over Community Notes.

Compared with other countries, Greece, like Czechia, is a country where the surrounding context is richer than the reception of the book itself.
