A Plurality Atlas

Who is Caroline Green?

A researcher at the University of Oxford's Institute for Ethics in AI in the UK, who has studied "social care", which supports the daily lives of older and disabled people. With Audrey Tang, Green created the "6-Pack of Care", which governs AI through the ideas of "care".

After the book ⿻ Plurality came out, Audrey Tang turned to the question of how to govern AI. Open the pages of that "6-Pack of Care", and this name stands next to Tang's.

In short

Caroline Green (Caroline Emmer De Albuquerque Green) is a researcher at the University of Oxford's Institute for Ethics in AI in the UK. Green has studied "social care", which supports the everyday lives of older and disabled people [1][2]. Together with Audrey Tang, Green created the 6-Pack of Care, a framework for governing AI through the ideas of "care" (attending to and looking after others) [3].

Connection to Plurality

Not an author of the book. Green is neither an author of nor a contributor to the book Plurality. The connection is as a co-creator of Civic AI / 6-Pack of Care, which Audrey Tang started after the book.

Co-author of the 6-Pack of Care. The institute's announcement presents the 6-Pack of Care as a research project developed by Ambassador Tang and Dr Green. It explains that the project combines the political scientist Joan Tronto's ethics of care with Tang's vision of Plurality. In this text, Green is described as the institute's Director of Research [2].

The main pages of civic.ai. On civic.ai, the site of the 6-Pack of Care, many of the main pages, including the six principles ("packs"), the FAQ and the glossary, are co-written by the two [3].

Podcasts and a conference. On the institute's podcast, with Green as host, Tang introduced Plurality in August 2025 and the 6-Pack of Care in September [1][4]. In March 2026 the two held the "Civic AI Conference" in Oxford, with speakers including Tronto [5]. In a conversation the same year, Green mentioned writing a book with Tang [6].

Main ideas

AI that starts from care. From February 2024 to March 2025, Green worked with people from long-term care in the UK (more than 100 people, including those who receive care, family carers, care workers and providers) to define "responsible AI in care" together. Green writes about this process as an example of the first principle of the 6-Pack, "Attentiveness". The definition was published in the medical journal The Lancet Healthy Longevity (2026) [7].

Making things together. Start not from a technical problem but from building relationships with people, and make things together with those affected. Green calls this "co-production" [7][1].

Small, locally rooted AI. Green presents "Dedicate", an AI to support care that the institute built from discussions with family carers, as close to the idea of small AI with a limited scope (Kami) that appears in the sixth principle of the 6-Pack, "Symbiosis" [1].

Can AI be compassionate? In a dialogue with the Tibetan Buddhist monk Geshe Lodoe Sangpo, Green asked whether AI can truly have compassion [8].
